Danny Solomon owns and operates Break Away Acres, an equine therapy center for abused kids and teens. Using his God-given ability to see the past, Danny has vowed to help as many kids as he can. Phoenix Nichols is his new trail guide, but her history and her pain put her in need of Danny’s help. After years of abuse, both Danny and Phoenix struggle to find their place. While Danny is happy with the world he’s created at Break Away, Phoenix is ready to bolt at every shifting shadow. When her past drags her back, Danny will be left to pick up the pieces. Can he show Phoenix the way to God? Will Phoenix finally find a safe place to land?
My Review
This book broke my heart in more ways than one. I was on the verge of tears throughout this entire novel. The storyline of this book is one that is both difficult but very real and active in our world. It is so sad to see so many kids go through abuse.
Ms. Bouldin did a phenomenal job at capturing the heart and emotion of kids going through abuse and trauma. It was real, raw, and sob worthy.
The characters were both amazing yet broken. They fit the story perfectly. I couldn’t ask for a better cast of characters.
One thing that I really loved about this book was all the faith content. Danny continually pointed everything back to God. Danny made sure he gave Him all the credit which was awesome to see.
The one thing had me a little off about this story was Danny and his family’s gifts. The whole concept just made me a little uncomfortable. This is why this book received 4 stars instead of 5.
Overall, I enjoyed this book as much as one can when it contains these hard topics. Ms. Bouldin did a fantastic job at both researching and writing. I did not read the two books before this one but this one can be read as a standalone, at least in my opinion.
*FTC: I received this book from Celebrate Lit in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to give a positive review. All though are my own.*
