When FBI agent Jack Shannon arrives in Corpus Christi, Texas, he is focused on one thing: find the man who has been selling encrypted government secrets to the Chinese through online birding chat rooms. But when a senator is shot during a hunting trip and the woman he was with is abducted, Jack agrees to join the search–especially when he discovers that the kidnapping victim is Aubrey Grayson, a woman he was once in love with.
As the search continues, it becomes clear the senator may not have been the intended victim–and Aubrey may be connected to the other case Jack is supposed to be working on. Can Jack untangle the knots before it’s too late? And when he learns the truth, will it be too painful to get past?
Join the hunt for the truth–and a traitor–in this tension-laden story of secrets, betrayal, and second chances.
This was a really good book. I really enjoyed this book a lot. Ms. Harris is a fantastic job at keeping me hooked from page one. I found myself rooting hard for the main characters and despising the bad ones. The plot was upbeat and though not as suspenseful as much suspense books, it still had you turning the pages to see what happens next.
The characters were amazing and I loved seeing Aubrey’s character arc develop throughout this book. I loved her characters and my heart ached for the poor girl. She went through a lot in the book, but thankfully she had Jake right besides her. I really loved Jake’s character. I felt like he balanced Aubrey perfectly and though he at times was a tad bit stereotypical, he also was more realistic due to his personality.
Aubrey and Jake’s relationship was a minor thing in this book and it gave it more of a realistic aspect to their romance. I really liked that because this book was not one to have their romance be up front. But honestly they are made for each other! I do think Aubrey’s opinions on relationships could have been expanded on a little more but I still enjoyed watching her grow in that area of her life.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. It was a nice quarantine read and I cannot wait to see what Ms. Harris has in store for us next!!
